Reading Coffee Prices: Indicators, Differentials and the Final Quote

Why a world coffee indicator is a useful reference but never the delivered price of a specific lot.

Start with the benchmark

The International Coffee Organization publishes coffee market reporting and price indicators. These help buyers compare broad market movement over time, but they are not quotations for an individual origin, grade or shipment. Check the observation date, units, coffee group and methodology before comparing values. A historical report cannot establish today’s executable price.

Arabica and Robusta belong to distinct commercial markets. A movement in one should not be treated as the same movement in the other. Prices also reflect market expectations, while a supplier offer reflects the physical coffee available under specific delivery terms.

Understand the differential

A physical offer can carry a premium or discount relative to a benchmark. Origin, processing, preparation, defects, cup quality, certification requirements and availability all affect that difference. Comparing only the headline price can hide a large change in product quality.

A regional name is not a substitute for a sample and a written specification. Buyers should compare like-for-like offers before deciding that one exporter is cheaper.

Build the delivered cost

Freight, insurance, handling, storage, financing and destination charges change the landed cost. A quote through Oman should state the route and responsibilities clearly; a hub movement is not automatically cheaper than direct delivery. Currency and offer validity matter as much as the price printed on the first page.

Keep green and roasted offers separate. Roasting changes weight, packaging and freshness requirements, so their prices cannot be compared per kilogram without accounting for these differences.

Use data without pretending to forecast

For a buying programme, record the benchmark date alongside supplier quotations and approved samples. Review the latest official report rather than copying a stale price into a purchase order. Agree a validity window, shipment period and procedure for changes.

This article explains price interpretation; it does not publish live prices, investment advice or a forecast. The final commercial offer must come from the actual supplier-lot quotation.
