Vietnamese Coffee: Buying Robusta Beyond the Country Label

How region, preparation and contract specifications help distinguish Vietnamese coffee offers.

Use the country profile carefully

The ICO country profile for Vietnam explains sector structure, producing areas, coffee types and processing. It is a dated reference document, useful for background rather than a current production estimate or today’s price.

Vietnam’s Central Highlands are a major Robusta-growing area. Arabica is a smaller commercial segment linked to suitable cooler sites; the species must be stated on the offer.

Region is only the beginning

Đắk Lắk, Buôn Ma Thuột and Gia Lai can give an offer geographical context. Lâm Đồng includes different producing environments. None of these labels establishes screen size, defects, moisture or cup cleanliness.

Ask which producer or exporter assembled the lot and how it is prepared. Traceability should link the name on the offer to actual records.

Distinguish preparation

Dry-prepared and washed Robusta are separate sourcing categories. Washed preparation can change cup clarity, but the word washed does not guarantee a specialty score or absence of defects.

Roasting and extraction influence bitterness and body. Evaluate the intended espresso, phin or milk-coffee recipe rather than buying on a generic flavour description.

Compare equivalent quotations

State species, origin scope, harvest, preparation, screen and defect tolerances, moisture, packing and delivery terms. Use the same requirements when comparing exporters.

Request a representative sample and agree what happens if the shipped lot differs. Official sector data informs buying but cannot replace contractual quality controls.
